Nepenthes clipeata is a striking and unmistakable pitcher plant, distinguished by its broad, almost circular shield-like leaves and unusual peltate growth, where the short, sturdy tendril emerges from the underside of the leaf rather than directly from its tip. Its impressive pitchers can grow to around 30 cm tall, developing a rounded, swollen base that narrows through the middle before opening into a gently funnel-shaped upper section. The pitchers are robust and sculptural in appearance, complemented by a strongly arched lid and the plant’s characteristic covering of fine, elongated brown hairs across its stems, leaves and pitchers. Together, its rounded foliage, compact tendrils and substantial jug-shaped traps give N. clipeata a distinctive, almost prehistoric appearance unlike most other Nepenthes.
