Pinguicula 'Weser' is one of the most popular and widely cultivated Mexican butterwort hybrids, combining the compact growth habit of Pinguicula ehlersiae with the vigour and adaptability of Pinguicula moranensis. Originally developed by German horticulturist Alfred Lau, this hybrid has become a staple of carnivorous plant collections worldwide due to its attractive foliage, reliable growth, and ease of cultivation. Plants form symmetrical rosettes of succulent leaves that remain highly ornamental throughout the year and readily produce offsets as they mature.

Like all butterworts, Pinguicula 'Weser' captures small insects using specialised leaves covered in microscopic glands that secrete a sticky mucilage. Tiny flies, fungus gnats, and other small arthropods become trapped on the leaf surface, where digestive enzymes break down prey and release nutrients that are absorbed directly through the foliage. The leaves are typically bright green when grown in lower light but often develop striking pink, salmon, or reddish-purple colouration under brighter conditions. Mature plants produce attractive violet-pink flowers with a pale throat, held above the foliage on slender stems and often appearing repeatedly throughout the growing season.

The enduring popularity of Pinguicula 'Weser' stems from its combination of beauty, vigour, and forgiving nature. Like many Mexican butterwort hybrids, it transitions between an actively carnivorous rosette and a compact succulent rosette during cooler or drier periods. Its colourful foliage, frequent flowering, and strong growth make it an excellent choice for beginners while remaining a favourite among experienced collectors. Few butterwort hybrids have contributed as much to the popularity of the genus in cultivation as the classic and dependable 'Weser'.
