Pinguicula Sethos (ehlersiae x moranensis) (Butterwort)

Pinguicula 'Sethos' is one of the most widely cultivated Mexican butterwort hybrids, combining the compact growth and colourful foliage of Pinguicula ehlersiae with the vigour and adaptability of Pinguicula moranensis. Developed in cultivation, this hybrid has become a favourite among carnivorous plant enthusiasts due to its attractive appearance, reliable growth, and willingness to flower throughout much of the year. Plants form neat rosettes of succulent leaves that remain ornamental in all seasons, making them particularly well suited to indoor growing and windowsill collections.

Like all butterworts, Pinguicula 'Sethos' captures small insects using specialised leaves covered in microscopic stalked glands that secrete a sticky mucilage. Fungus gnats, fruit flies, and other tiny insects become trapped on the leaf surface, where digestive enzymes break down prey and release nutrients that are absorbed directly through the foliage. The leaves are typically bright green but often develop attractive shades of pink, bronze, or reddish-purple under stronger light. Mature plants regularly produce elegant violet-purple flowers with a pale throat, held above the rosette on slender stems and often appearing several times throughout the growing season.
