Pinguicula primuliflora (Primrose Butterwort)

Pinguicula primuliflora is a distinctive North American butterwort native to the coastal plains of the south-eastern United States, particularly Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. It grows in permanently moist bogs, seepage areas, stream margins, and wet pine savannahs where nutrient-poor soils and high humidity favour carnivorous plants. Unlike many other butterwort species, P. primuliflora often forms loose colonies through vegetative propagation, allowing it to spread gradually across suitable habitat. Its attractive flowers and unusual growth habit have made it one of the most popular North American butterworts in cultivation.

The bright green leaves are covered in microscopic glandular structures that produce a sticky mucilage used to capture small insects such as fungus gnats, midges, and other tiny invertebrates. Once prey is trapped, digestive enzymes break down soft tissues and release nutrients that are absorbed directly through the leaf surface. The foliage forms an open rosette and often develops plantlets at the tips of older leaves, a characteristic rarely seen in other butterwort species. During the flowering season, plants produce large, elegant flowers with pale lavender to soft violet petals that resemble miniature primroses, giving rise to the species name primuliflora, meaning "primrose-flowered".

Unlike many Mexican butterworts, Pinguicula primuliflora does not form a succulent winter rosette and generally remains carnivorous throughout the year when conditions are favourable. Its ability to reproduce readily from leaf-tip plantlets, combined with its attractive flowers and vigorous growth, makes it an excellent species for both beginners and experienced growers. As one of the most recognisable North American butterworts, it provides a fascinating example of the diverse evolutionary strategies found within the genus.
