Pinguicula potosiensis (Butterwort)

Pinguicula potosiensis is a Mexican butterwort native to the state of San Luis Potosí in central Mexico, where it grows on limestone cliffs, rocky outcrops, and moss-covered seepage zones in mountainous habitats. These environments are characterised by mineral-rich substrates, seasonal rainfall, and periods of fluctuating moisture that have shaped the species' distinctive growth cycle. Plants form attractive rosettes of succulent leaves and are valued by collectors for their elegant appearance, compact growth habit, and attractive flowers.

Like other members of the genus, Pinguicula potosiensis captures small insects using specialised leaves covered in microscopic glands that produce a sticky mucilage. Tiny flies, fungus gnats, and other small arthropods become trapped on the leaf surface, where digestive enzymes break down prey and release nutrients that are absorbed directly through the foliage. The leaves are typically bright green to yellow-green and may develop subtle pink or reddish tones under stronger light.
