Pinguicula moranensis 'Superba' is a selected form of the highly variable Mexican butterwort Pinguicula moranensis, prized for its large size, vigorous growth, and particularly impressive flowers. Native populations of P. moranensis occur throughout the mountainous regions of central and southern Mexico, where they grow on moss-covered cliffs, rocky slopes, and thin soils within cloud forests and pine-oak woodlands. The cultivar 'Superba' is regarded as one of the most ornamental forms of the species, producing broad rosettes and exceptionally showy blooms.

Like other members of the genus, Pinguicula moranensis 'Superba' captures small insects using specialised leaves covered in microscopic glands that secrete a sticky mucilage. Fungus gnats, tiny flies, and other minute arthropods become trapped on the leaf surface, where digestive enzymes break down prey and release nutrients that are absorbed directly through the foliage. The plant forms an attractive rosette of smooth, succulent leaves that range from bright green to pink, bronze, or reddish-purple under stronger light. During the flowering season, mature plants produce large flowers in shades of pink to lavender-purple, often noticeably larger than those seen in typical forms of the species.

Like other forms of Pinguicula moranensis, 'Superba' follows a seasonal growth cycle, producing actively carnivorous foliage during favourable conditions and transitioning to a compact succulent rosette during cooler or drier periods. Its combination of large flowers, colourful foliage, and reliable growth has made it a favourite among butterwort enthusiasts and collectors. Whether appreciated for its horticultural value or its connection to one of Mexico's most diverse carnivorous plant species, Pinguicula moranensis 'Superba' remains an outstanding addition to any collection.
