In the wild, it grows on steep limestone cliffs, vertical rock faces, and permanently moist seepage zones where mineral-rich water flows across the substrate throughout much of the year. Unlike many Mexican butterworts that form compact, rounded rosettes, this species is renowned for its unusually long, narrow leaves, giving it a unique appearance among carnivorous plants and making it instantly recognisable to collectors.

The carnivorous leaves are covered in microscopic glandular hairs that produce a sticky mucilage used to capture small insects. Fungus gnats, tiny flies, and other minute arthropods become trapped on the leaf surface, where digestive enzymes break down prey and release nutrients that are absorbed directly through the foliage. Mature plants often produce cascading rosettes of strap-like leaves that may exceed 20 cm in length.
