Pinguicula laueana (Butterwort)

Pinguicula laueana is one of the most striking and sought-after Mexican butterworts, endemic to the cloud forests of Oaxaca, Mexico. It grows on steep limestone cliffs, moss-covered rock faces, and shaded mountain slopes where high humidity, cool temperatures, and mineral-rich seepage provide ideal growing conditions. Named in honour of German botanist and explorer Alfred Lau, this species is renowned for its vivid flowers and colourful foliage, making it a standout among the many butterworts native to Mexico.

Like other members of the genus, Pinguicula laueana captures small insects using specialised leaves covered in microscopic glands that secrete a sticky mucilage. Fungus gnats, tiny flies, and other small arthropods become trapped on the leaf surface, where digestive enzymes break down prey and release nutrients that are absorbed directly through the foliage. The rosette consists of smooth, succulent leaves that range from bright green to deep burgundy, red, or wine-coloured tones under strong light. During the flowering season, mature plants produce spectacular crimson-red flowers on slender stems held above the foliage. This intense red pigmentation is exceptionally rare within the genus and is one of the defining characteristics of the species.

Like many Mexican butterworts, Pinguicula laueana follows a seasonal growth cycle, producing actively carnivorous foliage during wetter periods and transitioning to a compact succulent rosette during cooler or drier conditions. Its combination of vivid red flowers, colourful foliage, and relatively restricted natural distribution has made it one of the most desirable species in cultivation.
