Pinguicula hemiepiphytica (Butterwort)

Pinguicula hemiepiphytica is one of the most unusual members of the butterwort genus, native to the cloud forests of Oaxaca and neighbouring regions of southern Mexico. Unlike most Pinguicula, which grow directly on soil or rock, this species is often found growing as a lithophyte or partial epiphyte on moss-covered cliffs, tree trunks, and shaded rock faces. The species name hemiepiphytica reflects this unusual growth habit, meaning "partly epiphytic". Constant humidity, frequent mist, and mineral-rich seepage provide the conditions necessary for its survival in these cool mountain forests.

The plant forms an attractive rosette of bright green, carnivorous leaves covered in microscopic glands that secrete a sticky mucilage. Small flies, fungus gnats, and other tiny invertebrates become trapped on the leaf surface, where digestive enzymes break down prey and release nutrients that are absorbed directly through the foliage. The leaves are generally larger and softer than those of many Mexican butterworts, reflecting the consistently humid conditions of its habitat. During the flowering season, mature plants produce elegant white to pale lavender flowers on tall stems. The blooms are notable for their unusually long floral spur, a distinctive feature that separates P. hemiepiphytica from most other species in the genus.

Unlike many Mexican butterworts that experience pronounced dry seasons, Pinguicula hemiepiphytica originates from habitats with relatively stable moisture levels and may show only a modest seasonal reduction in growth. Its unusual ecology, long-spurred flowers, and partly epiphytic lifestyle make it one of the most fascinating species available to collectors. As one of the few butterworts adapted to growing above the ground on trees and moss-covered surfaces, it represents a remarkable example of evolutionary diversity within the genus.
