Pinguicula gypsicola (Gypsum Butterwort)

Pinguicula gypsicola is one of the most distinctive and specialised Mexican butterworts, endemic to the gypsum-rich hills of San Luis Potosí, Mexico. Unlike most species that inhabit limestone cliffs and mossy rock faces, P. gypsicola is adapted to highly mineralised gypsum outcrops where few other plants can survive. The harsh, exposed conditions of its native habitat have driven the evolution of a unique growth form that sets it apart from virtually every other butterwort species.

The carnivorous leaves are long, narrow, and grass-like, forming a fountain-shaped rosette that bears little resemblance to the broad-leaved butterworts commonly seen in cultivation. Despite their unusual appearance, the leaves are covered in microscopic glands that secrete a sticky mucilage used to trap fungus gnats, small flies, and other tiny arthropods. Once prey is captured, digestive enzymes break down soft tissues and release nutrients that are absorbed directly through the foliage. During the flowering season, mature plants produce elegant pale violet to lavender-purple flowers held above the foliage on slender stems, creating a striking contrast against the narrow leaves.

Like many Mexican butterworts, Pinguicula gypsicola undergoes a seasonal transition, producing a compact succulent rosette during cooler or drier periods before returning to active carnivorous growth when conditions improve. Its highly specialised adaptation to gypsum soils, unusual grass-like foliage, and distinctive appearance have made it one of the most sought-after species among butterwort enthusiasts. It is also an important parent in hybrid breeding, where its unique leaf form is often passed on to offspring, creating some of the most unusual hybrids in cultivation.
