Pinguicula 'Guatemala' (Butterwort)

Pinguicula 'Guatemala' is a locality form of butterwort originating from the cool, humid highlands of Guatemala. In its native habitat, it grows on moss-covered rock faces, shaded cliffs, and moist banks within cloud forests where frequent mist, high humidity, and nutrient-poor substrates create ideal conditions for carnivorous plants. These environments support a unique flora, and Guatemalan butterworts are particularly valued for their elegant growth habit and connection to the southernmost reaches of the Mexican–Central American Pinguicula complex.

Like other members of the genus, Pinguicula 'Guatemala' captures small insects using specialised leaves covered in microscopic glands that secrete a sticky mucilage. Fungus gnats, tiny flies, and other minute arthropods become trapped on the leaf surface, where digestive enzymes break down prey and release nutrients that are absorbed directly through the foliage. Plants form attractive rosettes of smooth, succulent leaves that range from bright green to soft pink or bronze tones under stronger light. During the flowering season, mature plants produce elegant lavender to violet-purple flowers on slender stems that rise above the foliage, creating a striking contrast against the compact rosette.
