Pinguicula gigantea var. synalta is a large-growing form of the Giant Butterwort, a species native to the limestone mountains of Oaxaca, Mexico. In the wild, Pinguicula gigantea inhabits moist cliffs, mineral-rich seepages, and moss-covered rock faces where humidity remains high for much of the year. This form retains the impressive size and vigorous growth for which the species is renowned, producing broad rosettes that can become substantially larger than those of most other butterworts.

Like other members of the genus, Pinguicula gigantea var. synalta captures small insects using specialised leaves covered in microscopic glands that secrete a sticky mucilage. Fungus gnats, small flies, and other tiny invertebrates become trapped on the leaf surface, where digestive enzymes break down prey and release nutrients that are absorbed directly through the foliage. The leaves are broad, smooth, and often bright green with a glossy appearance. Mature plants produce elegant pale lavender to violet flowers on tall stems held above the foliage, creating a striking display when in bloom.

One of the most notable characteristics of Pinguicula gigantea is its ability to produce large numbers of plantlets from leaf pullings, making it one of the easiest butterwort species to propagate.
