Pinguicula gigantea (Giant Butterwort)

Pinguicula gigantea is one of the largest and most impressive butterwort species known, native to the limestone mountains of Oaxaca, Mexico. In its natural habitat, it grows on steep rock faces, moss-covered cliffs, and mineral-rich seepage zones where moisture is available for much of the year. Mature plants form broad, open rosettes that can exceed 30 cm in diameter, making them significantly larger than most other species in the genus. Its substantial size and vigorous growth have made it one of the most sought-after Mexican butterworts in cultivation.

Like other members of the genus, Pinguicula gigantea captures small insects using specialised leaves covered in microscopic glands that secrete a sticky mucilage. Fungus gnats, small flies, and other tiny invertebrates become trapped on the leaf surface, where digestive enzymes break down prey and release nutrients that are absorbed directly through the foliage. The broad leaves are typically bright green to yellow-green and often display a glossy appearance. Unusually for a Mexican butterwort, P. gigantea is capable of producing carnivorous leaves throughout the year under suitable conditions and may not form a strongly defined succulent winter rosette like many related species. Mature plants produce elegant lavender to pale violet flowers on tall stems that rise well above the foliage.

The species is particularly notable for its ability to reproduce readily from leaf pullings, making it one of the easiest butterworts to propagate vegetatively. Its large size, attractive flowers, and vigorous nature have also made it a valuable parent in the development of numerous horticultural hybrids.
