Pinguicula 'Florian' is a beautiful Mexican butterwort hybrid combining the vibrant flowers of Pinguicula debbertiana with the compact growth habit of Pinguicula esseriana. Developed in cultivation, this hybrid has become highly regarded for its colourful appearance, manageable size, and reliable growth. Plants form neat, symmetrical rosettes that remain attractive throughout the year, making 'Florian' an excellent choice for both dedicated carnivorous plant collections and decorative indoor displays.

Like other butterworts, Pinguicula 'Florian' captures small insects using specialised leaves covered in microscopic glands that produce a sticky mucilage. Fungus gnats, fruit flies, and other tiny arthropods become trapped on the leaf surface, where digestive enzymes break down prey and release nutrients that are absorbed directly through the foliage. The leaves are typically bright green but often develop attractive shades of pink, peach, bronze, or soft red under stronger light. During the flowering season, mature plants produce striking magenta-pink to deep rose-coloured flowers held above the rosette on slender stems. The vivid blooms are inherited from P. debbertiana and provide a dramatic contrast against the compact foliage.

Like many Mexican butterwort hybrids, Pinguicula 'Florian' undergoes a seasonal transition between actively carnivorous growth and a compact succulent rosette during cooler or drier periods. Its combination of colourful foliage, vibrant flowers, and compact growth habit has made it one of the most popular butterwort hybrids in cultivation. Easy to appreciate and highly ornamental, 'Florian' is an outstanding example of the beauty that can be achieved through hybridisation within the genus Pinguicula.
