Pinguicula emarginata (Butterwort)

Pinguicula emarginata is a charming Mexican butterwort native to the states of Hidalgo and Querétaro, where it grows on moist limestone cliffs, moss-covered rock faces, and shaded seepage zones within mountainous habitats. These environments provide constant humidity, mineral-rich water, and excellent drainage, creating ideal conditions for this compact carnivorous plant. The species is named for the slight notch often present at the tip of its leaves, a characteristic reflected in the term emarginata, meaning "notched". Its small size and attractive flowers have made it a long-standing favourite among butterwort enthusiasts.

Like other members of the genus, Pinguicula emarginata captures small insects using specialised leaves covered in microscopic glands that secrete a sticky mucilage. Fungus gnats, tiny flies, and other minute arthropods become trapped on the leaf surface, where digestive enzymes break down prey and release nutrients that are absorbed directly through the foliage. Plants form neat, compact rosettes of bright green leaves that may develop pink or reddish highlights under stronger light. During the flowering season, mature specimens produce elegant violet to lavender-purple flowers held above the foliage on slender stems. The blooms are often relatively large compared with the size of the rosette, creating a particularly attractive display.

This species follows the seasonal growth cycle typical of many Mexican butterworts, producing actively carnivorous foliage during favourable conditions and transitioning to a compact succulent rosette during cooler or drier periods.
