Pinguicula ehlersiae (Butterwort)

Pinguicula ehlersiae is a miniature Mexican butterwort endemic to the limestone mountains of San Luis Potosí, Mexico. In the wild, it grows on steep rock faces, moss-covered cliffs, and mineral-rich seepage zones where seasonal moisture and excellent drainage create ideal conditions for growth. Despite its small size, this species is regarded as one of the most attractive members of the genus, forming compact, symmetrical rosettes that remain highly ornamental throughout the year.

Like other butterworts, Pinguicula ehlersiae captures small insects using specialised leaves covered in microscopic glands that secrete a sticky mucilage. Fungus gnats, tiny flies, and other minute arthropods become trapped on the leaf surface, where digestive enzymes break down prey and release nutrients that are absorbed directly through the foliage. The leaves are typically bright green but frequently develop pink, red, or burgundy tones under stronger light, often producing a striking contrast between the colourful margins and the centre of the rosette. Mature plants produce elegant pink to violet-purple flowers with a pale throat, often large in proportion to the size of the plant.

This species follows the seasonal growth cycle characteristic of many Mexican butterworts, producing actively carnivorous foliage during favourable conditions and transitioning to a compact succulent rosette during cooler or drier periods. Its compact size, colourful leaves, and attractive flowers have made Pinguicula ehlersiae one of the most important species in butterwort cultivation and breeding. It is a parent of several famous hybrids, including 'Weser' and 'Sethos', and remains highly prized in its own right for its beauty and refined growth habit.
