Pinguicula debbertiana (Butterwort)

Pinguicula debbertiana is a distinctive Mexican butterwort endemic to the state of Oaxaca, where it grows on steep limestone cliffs, rocky outcrops, and moss-covered seepage zones within seasonally humid mountain habitats. First described in 1991 and named in honour of German carnivorous plant enthusiast Karl-Heinz Debbert, this species is notable for its compact growth habit and exceptionally colourful flowers. In the wild, it occupies mineral-rich substrates where water slowly trickles across rock surfaces, creating ideal conditions for carnivorous plants adapted to nutrient-poor environments.

Like other members of the genus, Pinguicula debbertiana captures small insects using specialised leaves covered in microscopic glands that secrete a sticky mucilage. Tiny flies, fungus gnats, and other small arthropods become trapped on the leaf surface, where digestive enzymes break down prey and release nutrients that are absorbed directly through the foliage. The plant forms a neat rosette of bright green to yellow-green leaves, often remaining relatively compact even when mature. During the flowering season, it produces striking magenta to deep pink flowers with a contrasting pale throat, among the most vibrant blooms found within the Mexican butterwort group.

This species follows the seasonal growth cycle typical of many Mexican Pinguicula, producing actively carnivorous foliage during wetter periods and transitioning to a compact succulent rosette during cooler or drier conditions. Its vivid flowers, manageable size, and relatively restricted natural distribution have made Pinguicula debbertiana highly desirable among collectors. As one of the more colourful Mexican species, it is frequently regarded as a standout plant when in bloom and remains a favourite among enthusiasts interested in species-level butterworts.
