Pinguicula calderoniae (Butterwort)

Pinguicula calderoniae is a miniature Mexican butterwort endemic to Oaxaca, Mexico, where it grows on moist limestone cliffs, shaded rock faces, and moss-covered seepage zones in mountainous habitats. Named in honour of Mexican botanist Graciela Calderón de Rzedowski, this species is among the smallest members of the genus, forming compact rosettes that rarely exceed a few centimetres in diameter. Its diminutive size and restricted natural distribution have made it a particularly desirable species among collectors of Mexican carnivorous plants.

Like other butterworts, Pinguicula calderoniae captures small insects using specialised leaves covered in microscopic glands that secrete a sticky mucilage. Tiny flies, fungus gnats, springtails, and other minute invertebrates become trapped on the leaf surface, where digestive enzymes break down prey and release nutrients that are absorbed directly through the foliage. The leaves are bright green and arranged in a tight, symmetrical rosette. Despite its small stature, the species produces relatively large and attractive flowers, typically displaying shades of violet to lavender-purple with a contrasting pale throat, creating a striking display above the foliage.

This species follows the seasonal growth cycle characteristic of many Mexican butterworts, producing actively carnivorous leaves during favourable conditions and transitioning to a compact succulent rosette during cooler or drier periods.
