Pinguicula 'Aphrodite' (Butterwort)
Pinguicula 'Aphrodite' (Butterwort)
Pinguicula 'Aphrodite' is one of the most popular and widely cultivated butterwort hybrids, renowned for its large flowers, vigorous growth, and ornamental foliage. Developed from a cross between Pinguicula moctezumae and Pinguicula agnata, this hybrid combines the robust nature of P. agnata with the elegant floral characteristics of P. moctezumae. The result is a fast-growing plant that forms attractive rosettes and flowers readily, making it a favourite among both beginner and experienced carnivorous plant growers.
Like other members of the genus, Pinguicula 'Aphrodite' captures small insects using specialised leaves covered in microscopic glands that secrete a sticky mucilage. Fungus gnats, fruit flies, and other tiny arthropods become trapped on the leaf surface, where digestive enzymes break down prey and release nutrients that are absorbed directly through the foliage. The leaves form a broad rosette of bright green foliage that may develop subtle pink or bronze tones under stronger light. During the flowering season, mature plants produce exceptionally large flowers in shades of rich pink to lavender-purple. The blooms are often significantly larger than those of many other butterworts and may be produced repeatedly throughout the year.
The popularity of Pinguicula 'Aphrodite' stems from its combination of impressive flowers, reliable growth, and adaptability. Unlike many Mexican butterworts, it often shows only a modest seasonal reduction in growth and may continue producing carnivorous leaves for much of the year under suitable conditions. Its hybrid vigour, long flowering season, and showy appearance have established it as one of the most recognisable and rewarding butterwort hybrids available, making it an outstanding addition to any carnivorous plant collection.
