Pinguicula agnata (Butterwort)

Pinguicula agnata is one of the most widespread and adaptable Mexican butterworts, native to the limestone hills and rocky slopes of Hidalgo, Querétaro, and neighbouring regions of central Mexico. In the wild, it grows on calcareous cliffs, rocky outcrops, and thin soils where seasonal rainfall and mineral-rich substrates support its growth. Its resilience and attractive appearance have made it one of the most commonly cultivated species in the genus and an important parent in the development of many popular butterwort hybrids.

Like other members of the genus, Pinguicula agnata captures small insects using specialised leaves covered in microscopic glands that secrete a sticky mucilage. Fungus gnats, tiny flies, and other minute arthropods become trapped on the leaf surface, where digestive enzymes break down prey and release nutrients that are absorbed directly through the foliage. Plants form broad, smooth rosettes of bright green leaves that may develop subtle pink, peach, or bronze tones under stronger light. During the flowering season, mature specimens produce elegant white to pale lavender flowers with a distinctive violet throat, held above the foliage on slender stems.

One of the defining characteristics of Pinguicula agnata is its vigour and adaptability. Like many Mexican butterworts, it transitions between an actively carnivorous rosette and a compact succulent rosette during cooler or drier periods, allowing it to withstand seasonal changes in its native habitat.
