Ceratodon purpureus, commonly known as Fire Moss or Purple Horn-Toothed Moss, is a hardy, compact moss that forms dense, velvety green mats. As it matures, it can develop distinctive reddish stems and red-purple sporophytes, adding beautiful colour and texture to miniature planted displays.
Unlike many mosses that require constantly humid, shaded conditions, Ceratodon purpureus is remarkably adaptable. It naturally colonises exposed soil, rock and disturbed ground and can tolerate periods of drying before greening up again when moisture returns.
