The Utricularia Reference Library brings together three ways of finding a bladderwort: its scientific name, its place in the classification and the habitat in which it grows. These routes overlap, but they are not interchangeable. A habitat heading explains a way of living; a section heading explains a taxonomic grouping; a species account follows one botanical identity.

How to use the library
If you have a plant label, begin with the alphabetical index. Keep the full wording, including any subspecies, hybrid sign, cultivar name or locality. If the name is absent, check its status in the linked botanical sources rather than assuming that the plant does not exist. Older names, newly described taxa and disagreements between treatments require explicit reconciliation.
If you are choosing a growing method, start with the habitat and cultivation guides, then consult the species evidence. If you are comparing botanical relationships, use the subgenus and section guides. A cultivation report may use an older classification without making its observations useless; the reader needs to know which plants the author actually grew.
The opening reading route
- Start Here; How Bladderworts Work; Understanding Names and Classification.
- Terrestrial, large-leaved, epiphytic, bromeliad-dwelling, lithophytic and rheophytic bladderworts.
- Affixed aquatic, subaquatic and free-floating aquatic bladderworts.
- Seasonal growth and Australian diversity.
- Subgenera Polypompholyx, Bivalvaria and Utricularia.
- Growing setups; water, light, temperature and media; propagation; flowering and troubleshooting.
Species profiles and specialist section accounts extend this opening route. Index inclusion records the intended botanical coverage; it does not mean every account has already been released or that a plant is available from Nano Nursery.
Alphabetical species and hybrid index
This index preserves the dated Plants of the World Online baseline checked on 22 September 2026: 288 species entries and four named hybrid entries. It is a reference snapshot, not a claim that taxonomy has stopped changing. Recognised infraspecific taxa and cultivated names require their own additional checks. The multiplication sign marks the hybrid entries.

Section-name register
The register preserves 38 section-name headings from historical and more recent treatments. They are not 38 independently accepted current sections. Some names are absorbed into broader sections; others still need a section-specific revision check. Keeping those distinctions visible prevents the same group being counted twice.

The register begins with Schlauer's 2010 systematic review and incorporates the explicitly cited revisions in the subgenus introductions. The dedicated section accounts provide the fuller treatment, diagnostic discussion and species membership. A historical name remains a useful search term even when it is no longer adopted as a separate section.
Cultivated-name directory
This directory brings together 18 names with checked published descriptions and their accounts in this library. It is a dated working inventory, not a claim that no other cultivar names exist. Species names, named natural hybrids and cultivars are separate categories. An identical parent cross or a similar flower does not, by itself, establish cultivar identity.

Utricularia ‘King Ghidorah’
Greg Bourke selected this cultivar from second-generation offspring of a cross between U. reniformis and U. nelumbifolia. Its distinguishing floral pattern combines three central yellow-and-orange stripes edged in purple on the swollen lower lip, with a dark-purple patch on the upper lip. The description records large kidney-shaped leaves, plants typically 10–30 cm tall and flowering stems reaching 50 cm. Stolons rise slightly before growing down into the medium.
Bourke reported late-spring-to-autumn flowering and suitability for pots or low-growing water-filled bromeliads. Those are observations for this cultivated selection, rather than a universal prescription for either parent species. Original description, 2021, page 156. The registrar records registration on 30 December 2021. Registration list.
Utricularia ‘Garcia’s Treasure’
Baião and Garcia described a naturally occurring form of U. longifolia with its lower flower lip divided into three slightly upturned lobes and a reduced upper lip. The pink flowers retain an apparently unmodified spur. The authors reported no apparent pollen production and specified division for propagation; the vegetative parts otherwise resembled typical U. longifolia.
Gabriel Garcia found the plant in 2013, growing in sphagnum near a river at Ibicoara, Bahia, Brazil. Bruno Garcia subsequently maintained and propagated it. The name honours both men. Original description, 2023, page 123. Its registration is recorded as 26 August 2023. Registrar's 2022–2023 list.
Utricularia ‘Nüdlinger Flair’
Thomas Carow made the original cross in June 1994 using U. alpina as the seed parent and U. humboldtii as the pollen parent. His description records blue-violet flowers about 5 cm long, with conspicuous yellow palate ridges surrounded by a broad white mark. Flowering stems reached 30 cm and usually carried two to four flowers.
Carow grew the plants in sphagnum, reporting approximately 12°C in winter and 15–25°C in summer, with several hours of direct sunlight. These describe his conditions in Germany, not measured temperature limits or an Australian exposure recommendation. He named the hybrid after Nüdlingen and its local village fair. Original description, 2008, page 110.
Retain the source and identification history when sharing any of these plants. A cultivar account describes the named material; it does not establish that Nano Nursery stocks it or that an unidentified plant belongs to it.
Utricularia ‘Brazilian Beauty’
Greg Bourke selected this vigorous clone from a 2010 cross between Utricularia reniformis and U. nephrophylla. His description reports leaf and flower dimensions and shapes intermediate between the parents. The name refers to their Brazilian origins. The published account does not establish a temperature range or a standard potting recipe. Keep the selected clone’s provenance with divisions; the same parent combination alone does not establish cultivar identity.

Utricularia ‘Pittier Moon’
Travis Wyman and Gert Hoogenstrijd described this robust Utricularia alpina clone, previously distributed as Henry Pittier clone #1. Its reported national-park origin was uncertain. Their plants had thick, diamond-shaped leaves typically 20–45 cm long and 4–8 cm wide, and two to four unusually large white flowers per inflorescence. The authors required vegetative propagation for plants retaining the cultivar name: selfed seed was viable, but inheritance of the defining characters was unproven. Henry Pittier clone #2 is a different plant; neither a large leaf nor a locality label establishes ‘Pittier Moon’ identity.

Utricularia ‘YM Mirage Rabbit’
Yan-Min Ma made this Utricularia livida (Durban, South Africa) × U. sandersonii cross in Hualien, Taiwan, in March 2024. The original description reports the first flower opening on a 5–6 cm scape, with approximately 13 flowers opening successively. Flowers measure about 1.3 × 0.6 cm, with rabbit-ear-like upper lobes, a broad lower lip and a white throat carrying yellow markings that grade into pale violet or bluish purple. Leaves lie close to the substrate. The breeder specifies vegetative propagation. These dimensions describe the breeder’s observations, not guaranteed performance in every growing setup.

Utricularia ‘YM Pixie’
Yan-Min Ma selected this cultivar in 2026 from a March 2024 cross of Utricularia livida (Durban, South Africa) × U. sandersonii (Blue), made in Hualien, Taiwan. The first flower reportedly opens when the scape is about 2–2.5 cm long, and approximately eight flowers develop successively. Flowers are about 1.1 × 1.1 cm, with rounded upper lobes, a broad lower lip, a yellow throat patch and violet to bluish-purple colouring. Compact, spoon-shaped leaves lie against the growing medium. The breeder requires vegetative propagation. Its shorter scapes and rounded flower outline help distinguish the published description from ‘YM Mirage Rabbit’; both names still require reliable clone provenance.

The CPN cultivar index was reconciled on 23 September 2026. It distinguishes published descriptions from formal registration; the latter must not be assumed solely from inclusion here.
A short reading glossary
- Accession
- A recorded introduction of plant material into a collection, with its own identity and history.
- Accepted name
- The name adopted for a taxon by a particular reference or taxonomic treatment.
- Synonym
- A different scientific name treated as referring to the same taxon in the cited classification.
- Subgenus and section
- Ranks used to organise related species within a genus; a section lies below a subgenus.
- Infraspecific taxon
- A formally recognised taxon below species rank, such as a subspecies or variety.
- Cultivar
- A named cultivated selection or assemblage governed by cultivated-plant naming conventions; it is not a botanical subspecies.
- Provenance
- The documented origin and subsequent history of an accession.
- Stolon
- A spreading axis that can connect growth points and bear other structures. In bladderworts, interpreting organs can be more complex than familiar garden-plant terminology suggests.
- Turion
- A compact resting bud formed by certain aquatic plants.

How an account earns its claims
Each specialist account separates botanical description, field observations, cultivation experience and inference. A herbarium distribution record supports occurrence; it does not establish a potting recipe. A successful growing report supports the method used under the conditions reported; it does not prove a universal optimum. Missing information is identified rather than supplied through analogy alone.
Names are checked against the dated botanical baseline and relevant revisions. Conflicts are retained with the sources that explain them. Images require an identified subject and an appropriate right to use the photograph or illustration. A visually attractive image without that information is not a substitute for a diagnostic record.
The specialist reading programme
The next stage follows the section guides and individual species accounts, with cross-references for absorbed names. Recognised subspecies and varieties are treated beneath their species unless their differences justify a dedicated account. Named hybrids are distinguished from species, and verified cultivars and locality labels are documented separately.
As new accounts are released, this library becomes their navigation point. Its purpose is to make both the information and its limits easy to find, while preserving a clear route from an old plant label to the current discussion.
