Utricularia limmenensis: Species Profile

Utricularia limmenensis: Species Profile

Utricularia limmenensis brings the encyclopaedia to the Northern Territory. For this little bladderwort, careful flower measurements and a documented collecting history are more useful than a generic tropical-plant care label.

Name and classification

Utricularia limmenensis R.W.Jobson is accepted in Kew's genus checklist. Plants of the World Online. The series follows the placement in section Pleiochasia, subgenus Polypompholyx given in Reut and Płachno's species table. Sectional placement.

Botanical account

Published in Telopea in 2018, this annual was previously called Utricularia sp. Limmen (B.M.Stuckey 655 & I.D.Cowie). Its name refers to the Limmen Bight River catchment. Flowering stalks measure 25–40 mm, occasionally 50 mm; narrow leaves are 8–11 mm long, and traps 1.2–1.5 mm.

The pale violet corolla is 4.5–5.5 mm long, with white ridges near the lower lip's base. A narrow upper lip, clearly three-lobed lower lip and curved spur distinguish it from U. albiflora; the spur is 1.3–2 times the lower lip's length.

The original account documented two Northern Territory sites, approximately 50 km apart, on sandy clay beside retreating Melaleuca viridiflora swamps. Flowers and fruit were observed in May. One site lay within Limmen National Park. The authors requested conservation assessment after observing pig damage in nearby wetlands; their 2018 discussion does not establish a current threat category. Jobson, Baleeiro and Barrett, original description and illustrations, pages 74–77.

Reading the evidence accurately

Two documented sites in a taxonomic paper are a dated record of knowledge, not proof that only two populations exist today. Likewise, a May collection gives a confirmed flowering observation without defining the entire flowering season.

The original illustrations provide a practical reference for identification. Compare a side view as well as the flower's face, keeping the measurement scale visible. A frontal photograph can conceal the spur that helps separate superficially similar flowers.

Cultivation and propagation

No repeatable species-specific cultivation or seed-germination trial was established from the sources checked for this profile. Exact temperature limits, water depth, substrate proportions and seed-storage conditions therefore remain unresolved here.

For a legally obtained accession, a useful cultivation record would follow the whole generation: sowing, emergence, flowering, capsule development, seed collection and emergence of offspring. Record unsuccessful attempts as carefully as successful ones. A plant flowering once does not establish a method for maintaining it over successive generations.

The field setting suggests water-level change deserves investigation, but this is a research direction rather than a validated drying prescription. Neither annual life history nor a drying wetland edge establishes how dry cultivated seed or living tissue can safely become.

Names and outstanding checks

The earlier phrase name belongs in accession history. It should not be presented as a cultivar or a separate accepted species. The individual Kew taxon page was inaccessible during this review, so this account does not claim a complete synonym or infraspecific inventory. That check remains open in the coverage register.
