Nepenthes leyte is a Philippine species for which a reliable name record is much easier to establish than a tested cultivation recipe. This profile keeps those two kinds of knowledge separate, providing a documented starting point for identifying and recording a plant without inventing requirements.
Accepted name and type record
Kew accepts Nepenthes leyte Jebb & Cheek, first published in 2013. Kew records a climbing shrub native to Leyte in the wet tropical biome. The reviewed page displays no synonyms or accepted infraspecific children.
The International Plant Names Index records publication on 12 December 2013 and the type collection Argent, Mendum, R. Fuentes and B. S. Belonias 99214, gathered on 7 November 1999 at Mount Lobi near Dagami. The holotype is held at Kew, with isotypes recorded at Edinburgh and the Philippine National Herbarium.
A type anchors the application of a botanical name. It is not a living nursery clone, and the collection number should never be copied onto an unrelated cultivated plant as if it established ancestry. Similarly, a type locality does not document the source of every plant sold under the name.
Identification
The original diagnosis emphasises wingless upper pitchers and two lid-gland types.
These characters require the correct growth stage and close examination. A young plant without mature upper pitchers is an incomplete comparison. Keep an identification provisional when the relevant structures cannot yet be examined, and use the full linked diagnosis for a determination.
Distribution and evidence limits
Co’s Digital Flora of the Philippines records Leyte and an elevation of 900 metres. That is a locality-linked botanical record, not a measured temperature range. Neither that elevation nor Kew's broad biome category can determine a safe nightly minimum for a cultivated accession.
The accepted-name record also does not prove current commercial availability. An offer carrying the name needs its own documentation, especially where identity depends on structures absent from a small sale plant.
Growing and accession guide
No verified species-specific cultivation trial was established in the sources reviewed for this draft. The useful approach is to begin with the documented history of the actual plant.
- Before acquisition: Ask how the identification was made and whether photographs show the parent or the offered plant.
- Establishment: Record rooting and acclimatisation status alongside the supplier's successful conditions.
- Monitoring: Measure temperature and document watering, light changes and new growth.
- Identification record: Preserve the original label and add later determinations with their date and basis.
- Propagation: Retain uncertainty on offspring or divisions until the parent identification is resolved.
Editorial record: Reviewed 2 October 2026. This is an evidence-limited profile; a detailed cultivation account awaits documented experience. Authenticated photographs, owner and visual review remain pending.
