Drosera maanyaa-gooljoo: Long Petioles and a Name Chosen by Traditional Owners

Drosera maanyaa-gooljoo is a recently described annual sundew with an unusually distinct separation between leaf stalk and trapping blade. Its account also shows why the history of botanical research belongs alongside the physical description of a plant.

The 2023 description and the name

Krueger, Cross, the Dambimangari Rangers and Fleischmann described the species from the Buccaneer Archipelago and Yampi Peninsula. The Dambimangari and Mayala Traditional Owners selected its name: “maanyaa” refers to a centipede in Worrora, while “gooljoo” means grass in Bardi. The long tentacles of the trapping blade inspired the centipede comparison. Original publication

Retain the hyphen and complete spelling. The name records contributions to the species’ recognition and should not be shortened to an invented horticultural nickname in place of the botanical name.

What makes the leaves different

The original diagnosis emphasises petioles making up at least about half the leaf length, together with crescent-headed non-carnivorous structures near their bases and an otherwise inconspicuous surface covering. These characters separate it from the species compared in the paper. Diagnostic treatment

A photograph that crops out the leaf bases loses much of this information. Include the junction with the stem as well as the sticky blade, then add a magnified view of the appendages.

Known populations and the limits of the record

The description reported two known localities on the Traditional Owners’ lands and identified the need for further survey. Its conservation discussion concerns the evidence available for that publication; it should not be turned into an undated claim that exactly two populations exist everywhere today. Distribution and conservation discussion

A known distribution is a record of verified observations. Further searching can change its apparent extent without changing the identity of the species.

What is actually known about cultivation?

Carlton Carnivores’ page explicitly introduces its proposed growing conditions as an extrapolation made before the species entered cultivation in the author’s account. It suggests warm, bright, moist conditions by analogy with related annuals. That is not a demonstrated species-specific protocol, nor does the page establish current worldwide availability. Horticultural account and its qualification

For this encyclopedia, no exact substrate ratio, feeding requirement or germination timetable is presented as proven. A future useful cultivation report would identify the accession and document the complete sequence from germination through flowering to the next seed generation.

Reading this species within the series

The annual Arachnopus chapter supplies the wider biological context, but shared membership of a group does not remove the need for direct observations. Keep proposed methods separate from tested results, and retain the original identification and provenance of any cultivated material.

This species adds both a distinctive leaf architecture and a well-documented collaborative discovery to the encyclopedia. Its account remains strongest when it preserves the limits of current horticultural evidence as carefully as it preserves the name.
