pinguicula-sp-tolantongo-prob-ehlersiae
Pinguicula ehlersiae 'Tolantongo'

Tolantongo is a compact Mexican butterwort with overlapping leaves arranged in a neat rosette. Its foliage can develop pink to purplish tones, with colour varying according to light and growing conditions. Its small growth habit makes it well suited to a bright windowsill or indoor carnivorous plant collection.

During carnivorous growth, its leaves develop a sticky coating that traps tiny insects, including adult fungus gnats. Nutrients absorbed from captured prey supplement the plant’s growth, making this little butterwort as fascinating as it is attractive.

Provide bright, filtered light and a free-draining mix suited to Mexican Pinguicula. Keep the mix lightly moist during active carnivorous growth, allowing it to dry slightly between waterings. If the plant forms a tighter rosette of small, succulent leaves, reduce watering and allow the mix to dry further between waterings.

Fact Sheet

Plant type: Mexican butterwort

Identification: Tentatively identified as Pinguicula ehlersiae

Growth habit: Compact rosette

Foliage: May develop pink to purplish colouring

Light: Bright, filtered light or a suitable grow light

Water: Rainwater, distilled or reverse-osmosis water

Growing medium: Free-draining Mexican Pinguicula mix

Seasonal care: Reduce watering during succulent growth

Pot size: 4 cm
